Update to Volunteer and Community Service Hours - September 2023

Community Involvement Hours Update

Students are required to complete a minimum of 40 hours of community service prior to graduation. Community involvement is an important educational opportunity that allows students to develop skills and gain experiences to become successful and contributing members of society now and in the future.

New Community Hours Tracking Form

A new downloadable and editable PDF of the Community Involvement hours tracking form is now available. This new form, including eligible and ineligible activities, can be found under “Graduation Requirements and Community Involvement” at www.tvdsb.ca/highschool.  You can download a hard copy HERE.

Eligible and Ineligible Activities

On the back of the new Community Hours tracking form, students and families will find a checklist on how to complete community involvement, as well as lists of eligible and ineligible activities. Please note that the eligible activities that were previously allowed during Covid have changed as of September 1st, 2023.

Some activities that are now ineligible are:

  • Activities that take place during the time allotted for the instructional program on a school day. However, an activity that takes place during the student's lunch breaks or “spare” periods is permissible.
  • Payment for any community involvement activity.
  • Household chores are no longer permissible as community service hours.

Some examples of eligible activities are, but not limited to:

  • coaching minor sports team
  • reading buddy or tutoring outside of school time
  • assisting at a charity event (e.g. walk-a-thon)
  • participating in environmental projects (e.g. community clean up, tree planting)
